How to avoid the worst tourist hotspots in the city of Seville?

It is absolutely impossible to visit Seville without running into the tourist masses.

Tourism is massive here. But you can avoid the worst places, such as the square by the cathedral and the surrounding streets.

And by securing skip-the-line tickets beforehand, so that you avoid the massive queues at the attractions.

The further away from the cathedral – the fewer tourists

If you e.g. move over to the other side of the river there are not so many tourists.

The gypsy district Triana has become well-known – also among tourists – but here there are many small cozy streets where you can move around undisturbed – and it is a very special experience.

Avoid the worst tourist spots in the city of Seville - and get a good experience in Seville despite the tourist crowds

The Triana neighbourhood – seen from the river boat

An overlooked attraction is the city wall that encircles the historic centre.

It is quite impressive and can be seen in many places – completely without tourists. Eg. right next to the Andalusian Parliament, where you will also find another of the overlooked sights; the church Basilica de la Macarena.

A good way of getting around to see it all is with a 1-hour Tuk-Tuk tour. See it here.

The best thing about Seville is that there are restaurants and cafes everywhere

And it’s cheap to eat here. Even if you get away from it all and out into the residential areas, there are still good restaurants and local food experiences to be found.

A really good way to see Seville is with a river tour

It is actually a tourist trip, but the view and the experience do not fail despite the tourists on board (tickets).

The tour departs from the Gold Tower, Torre del Oro, all the way up to the site of the world exhibition EXPO-92 and back again.

Moreover, Torre del Oro is one of the attractions that you can easily visit without the multitude of tourists (ticket at the entrance).

Torre de Oro – the Golden Tower

There are, however, some of the major tourist attractions that are worth visiting despite the many tourists.

The Cathedral is huge and very impressive – and definitely worth a visit. But there are approx. 100 meter queue outside – and it goes slowly.

If you want to enter the cathedral, make sure you have bought tickets in advance, e.g. the Seville Super Combi.

Real Alcazar de Sevilla

The absolute best sight in Seville is the old Moorish palace Real Alcazar, which is almost as impressive as La Alhambra in Granada.

There are many tourists here and tickets must be bought in advance (e.g. the Seville Super Combi), but it is big and the tourists spread out so you can move around unhindered. Amazingly beautiful gardens and incredible architecture.

Plaza de España

Another fine sight is the Plaza de España with tiled benches for each of the Spanish provinces.

There are lots of tourists here, but it is a large square, so you can easily experience it without being particularly disturbed. Do also visit the small park opposite – it’s cozy and peaceful here.

Seville’s city wall stretches almost all the way around the historic center.

You can see it along the inner ring road, i.a. at the Andalusian Parliament and Basilica de la Macarena.

Where in Seville is the Andalusian Parliament located?

The Andalusian Autonomous Parliament is located on Seville’s inner ring road – just north of the historic centre.

By the city wall and Basilica de la Macarena.

Does Andalusia have self-governance?

Yes, just like Spain’s other 13 regions, Andalusia has ‘autonomy’.

It is a form of self-government in which justice, security, foreign and defense policy is conducted centrally in Madrid, while the health sector, the school system, environmental management and other welfare tasks lie with the autonomous regions.

Is Seville the capital of Andalusia?

Yes, Seville is the capital of Andalusia.

This is where the Andalusian Parliament is located, as well as the seat of the Andalusian government and the Andalusian Supreme Court.

The Andalusian government resides in the “Palacio de San Telmo”, which is a beautiful old palace located on the Gualdalquivir River, close to the Plaza de España and not far from the Real Alcazar and Seville Cathedral.

It is not possible to enter the Palacio de San Telmo, but it is beautiful to see – e.g. from the river cruise.

What is special about Seville’s Basilica de la Macarena?

The Basilica de la Macarena is one of the oldest churches in Seville.

Until recently, one of the dictator Franco’s top generals, Quiepo de Llano, was buried inside the church. It therefore had special status.

In connection with the reconciliation process after the Franco regime, a law has been passed that prohibits the glorification of the Franco regime.

Therefore, the remains of Quiepo de Llano have now been removed from the church.

What is the best thing about Seville?

In my eyes, the best thing about Seville is the countless cheap restaurants everywhere.

You can easily take a tapas tour with a stop at every restaurant you pass without going broke.

The biggest attraction in Seville is definitely the Real Alcazar. It is a great experience.

Is it cheap to eat out in Seville?

Yes, it’s super-cheap. There is great competition between the thousands of restaurants in the city centre.

Of course, there are also expensive restaurants, but those are primarily special gourmet restaurants that the locals get recommend.

Even the tourist restaurants have quite reasonable prices.

Where to get the best tapas in Seville?

Everywhere! All restaurants have tapas of one kind or another. And of different quality.

Don’t choose one restaurant to eat tapas at, but instead go on a tapas tour from one restaurant to another – and order a few dishes to share at each place.

Note that tapas are rarely specified on the menu card.

A tapa was originally a small thing that could be placed on the lid over a beer or a glass of wine.

Now sometimes you can order small dishes like a ‘tapa’ in some places, but this is not so widespread anymore.

Tapas (in the plural) is about ordering several dishes to put on the table so that everyone can reach.

Recommendation: Order 2 or 3 dishes for the middle of the table at each restaurant – and then take a trip through the whole city!

Are there also restaurants out in the residential areas?

Yes, lots! Naturally a little more scattered, but they are there.

For the Spanish – and not least the locals in Seville – being able to get to a bar or restaurant within 5 minutes is considered a human right.

Seville is probably the city in the world with the most restaurants and bars per capita.

Which specialties do you get at the restaurants in Seville?

In Seville you get all the Andalusian and Spanish dishes.

Of course, there are also restaurants with other cousines, but they are in minority.

In particular, there is a lot of fish here. Try e.g. ´pescaito frito´ – different kinds of deep-fried fish.

Also popular are the Spanish omelette (‘tortilla de patatas’), the Russian salad (‘ensaladilla rusa’), deep-fried prawns with chilli (‘gambas pil-pil’), the cold vegetable soup (‘gazpacho’) and of course the various ‘paella’.

What is the best way to see Seville?

Walking is good, but it can also quickly become too much.

Another popular way to get around Seville is by bike

Rent bikes or take a guided bike tour at one of the local agencies.

Alternatively with an open tuk-tuk. Book an open tuk-tuk tour here

The river flows through the provinces of Jaen, Cordoba and Seville before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean on the border between the provinces of Huelva and Cadiz.

Are the river cruises actually tourist traps?

The riverboats sail primarily with tourists. But I wouldn’t call them tourist traps.

Good enough, there are tourists on board, but you can easily sit undisturbed and watch the city glide by.

There are also smaller boats offering cruises with small groups and are therefore less touristy.

See more about the river trips here

Where in Seville do the river tours depart from?

Most river boats depart from the Golden Tower Torre del Oro.

From there they travel in both directions, so you get to see a lot of Seville at a leisurely pace and without traffic.

Are the river cruises a good experience?

I think a river cruise is the best way to experience Seville.

I appreciate the calm, the slow pace and that there is no traffic to deal with.

What was EXPO-92 in Seville?

EXPO-92 was the world exhibition held in Seville in 1992.

Each participating country built a magnificent pavilion, which has left an entire district of spectacular buildings.

In the 1990s – after the world exhibition was over – it became a desolate and abandoned area which was close to falling into disrepair.

But in the last several years the buildings have come back to life – and the area has been brightened up nicely with parks and lots of activity.

How to get to see in the EXPO-92 area of Seville?

You can of course take a bus or taxi over there and walk around.

But you can also get a good look at the buildings and the area from one of the river boats on the river cruise.

Finally, you can see the area on a visit to either Seville’s amusement park ‘Isla Mágica’ or when you go to a football match at Sevilla FC’s stadium.

What is Real Alcazar de Sevilla?

The Real Alcazar is Seville’s old Moorish palace – built by the Arabs who lived in Andalusia from 711 to 1498, i.e. throughout the entire Middle Ages.

The palace has fantastic architecture with countless fine details and large, beautiful courtyards.

Despite the tourists, the palace is actually a breath of calm and freshness, not to mention the Arabs’ many water elements and fountains in their architecture.

The Real Alcazar is Seville’s biggest attraction – you don´t want to miss it!

What makes Real Alcazar special?

Even if you are not interested in architecture, the Real Alcazar is a magnificent experience.

The Moorish architecture has two things in particular that make it a great experience:
